Portfolio Strategy — Global Impact

Where is the global burden of disease, and where has Anthropic made a dent?

What is a DALY? A Disability-Adjusted Life Year is one year of healthy life lost — either to premature death or to living with illness or disability. One DALY = one lost year of full health. A country with a high DALY rate per 100,000 people carries a heavier disease burden per capita. The GBD (Global Burden of Disease) study, published by IHME, estimates DALYs for every country and condition annually.

Option 1 — Geographic arrow map
Background = DALYs per 100k (GBD 2023, percentile-ranked). Arrows = estimated DALYs averted (illustrative). Height ∝ impact. Countries with no meaningful reach have no arrow.
Disease burden · DALYs per 100k (GBD 2023)
~15k (Gulf states)~85k (Central Africa)
Estimated DALYs averted (illustrative)
High — US, India, UK (>3M DALYs)
Medium — many countries (0.3–3M DALYs)
Low / broad early reach (<0.3M DALYs)
Interpretation: Color = DALY burden per capita (GBD 2023) — Gulf states pale yellow (~15k), US and India mid-range (~34–37k), Central Africa deep red (70–85k). Arrows show estimated DALYs averted — illustrative and sized by relative reach. US and India carry the largest impact by volume; Western Europe has broad but lighter reach. High-burden countries without arrows — DRC, Niger, Chad, CAR, South Sudan, Somalia — are the largest unaddressed gaps.

Option 2 — TAM gap scatter: DALY rate vs. DALYs reduced
Each bubble = one country. Size ∝ population. X = DALY rate per 100k (GBD 2023). Y = estimated DALYs reduced by Anthropic (millions). Bottom-right = highest-priority gap.
Active Anthropic partnership
No current partnership (TAM gap)
Interpretation: Countries bottom-right (high burden rate, no impact) are the largest unaddressed opportunities — Niger, CAR, South Sudan, Chad, Somalia. Note that China has a relatively low DALY rate (~27k) despite its size. India (33k) and the US (37k) have similar burden rates; Anthropic has driven far more impact in India so far. Rwanda's outsized Y position reflects the depth of its partnership relative to its total burden.

Option 3 — Treemap: DALY burden as total addressable market
Each rectangle = one country. Area ∝ total DALY burden (rate × population, GBD 2023), organized by continent. Color = burden intensity. Orange corner = estimated Anthropic impact — sized as the same proportion of the rectangle as DALYs addressed vs. total.
Rectangle area — total DALY burden (rate × population)
~15k / 100k (Gulf states)~85k / 100k (Central Africa)
Orange corner — Anthropic impact (illustrative)
Blue inset = fraction of burden addressed
No inset = no partnership data
Interpretation: India, China, and Indonesia dominate by sheer population mass. The blue insets — illustrating estimated Anthropic impact — are tiny even in deep-partnership countries like India (1.7%) and the US (4.2%), with Rwanda being the notable exception (~34% of burden, a deep focused partnership). High-burden countries with no blue inset — Nigeria, DR Congo, Niger, Chad — represent the largest unaddressed gap.
